The Project

The vast archive & growing collection is community and crowd sourced. It was originally established working in partnership with a volunteer research team of 'tile ambassadors' from Stoke-on-Trent & North Staffordshire. The wider local community and a national and international constituency of online contributors have shared their 'tile spots' both within the city and far beyond over the last five years. We hope you will GET IN TOUCH, share your photographs & help contribute to to this ever-growing online collection!

The Potteries Tile Trail is comprised of two interrelated resources:

  • Tile Trail leaflets - a series of introductory tile walks around tile locations in each of Stoke-on-Trent's famous six towns.

The Potteries Tile Trail project was led by the national Tiles and Architectural Ceramics Society (TACS) and funded by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) All Our Stories initiative. The project was devised & delivered by Danny Callaghan (Ceramic City Stories).

6 Towns | 6 Tile Trails We have created a series of six introductory 'tile trails' - one for each of Stoke- on-Trent's famous six towns: Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Stoke, Fenton and Longton. The trails are aimed at local residents and visitors alike. They offer a selection of varied and interesting examples of ceramics to be found in buildings and pubic spaces in each local area. We hope the trails encourage more people to explore and enjoy the city's wonderful 'in situ' ceramics. The trails can either be viewed by clicking on the digital documents (PDFs) below. Each trail can also be downloaded or printed out FREE of charge if desired. PLEASE CLICK ON THE IMAGES ABOVE TO ACCESS THE 6 TILE TRAILS.

Virtual Tours: 6 Towns | 6 Tile Trails The six tile trails are also available as a virtual 'tour' on our Historypin channel. You can follow the six trails online by accessing tile photographs 'pinned' (geolocated) on Google Street View.
